Week 4: Character Design

For the collaboration part of the is unit I have completed the 2d animation for a client, collaborating with a music compose to finnish the product. For the rest of the term I want to develop my character design and modelling skills utilising my traditional skills as well as my digital. I want to create characters to go into my environment with good topology so that they can then have the possibility of begin rigged at a later date.

Last term I started on the idea of two goblin like creates, small and living in a tree stump or in the hollow of a tree, no mare than 5 inches tall. These are the two pages of sketches of my initial idea. They are rough but its a start in the right direction.

I played around with more ideas for the character appearance but having the feeling of the character, the same essence. The female character is a mother figure, a cook, her domain is the kitchen. The bottom sketch show a little of the environment assets which will add to the character.

Although the idea of mice is appealing it is too much like other creatures already done, too similar to Beatrix Potter's work. I want to create these two characters as more humanoid characters. The closes reference T can find are Engywook and Urgl form the never ending story. They are an old couple living a seclude existence in very tight living quarters. They argue a lot and have the 'old married couple' vibe but they work well together as a couple. This is what I would like to create and capture in my characters.

Using is this as reference I went on to develop my sketches for both my characters, Furgul and Urgul. Furgul is a carpenter, quite and studious, and Urgul is the louder of the two, far more dominating but a great cook and wielder of spoons.

These sketches are a little more of what I would like but the shape of the body feels wrong. Furgul's body is far too long, especially the legs. His centre of gravity should be lower a little more like Urgul bellow.
