Character Development: Further Designs:
Having shown my tutor all my designs we both decided that the deer like creature was the most promising character to develop. I wanted to create a character which could be created to be photo-real but also fitted the brief of having a story/history behind it.
I started off the visual process by looking at both deers, giraffes (the way they hold and carry a long neck will be useful as my creature is of a simar build). In terms of mythology I found the animation princess mononoke very useful as there is a god like character called the Forest God by day and The Spirit walker by night. It changes form and is of a differnt style to mine but it folows simlar themes so was useful to see what was already out there.
The first stage after deciding on which character I would end up doing was to do some quick sketches of the character in various poses to get to know them. I must admit I found this quite difficult as I have trouble drawing fast and I discover more about the character by exploring a sketch properly which then gives me ideas for the next. Unfortunately this might be a problem when working under tight deadlines but as this character doesn't follow a specific archetype or have a human persona it will take me a little while longer than with a more humanistic character.
The story surrounding this character is unclear but I have as strong feeling that humans desire or fear it's powers and as humans do seek to destroy or capture that power for themselves. This is a piece of concept art witch explores this concept.
I found this class very difficult. I am much more adept to draw a more photo real likeness and creating a characters with exaggerated features on a face which I do not know well or people I am not familiar with. also we were completing the drawings in a sterile environment. The people in question knew that they were being drawn so didn't move so finding inspiration was tricky. The way I work is a slow and takes me a while to produce something worth while.

The makings on the back of this sketch are a devlopmtn form my previous sketches but are based on Megalithic Art which are abstract carvings found on rocks all over the British Isle but also Ireland where my creature comes form:
